Chanakya About this sound pronunciation  fl. c. 4th century BCE) was an Indian teacher, thinker, economist, jurist and regal advisor. He is usually determined as Kau? ilya or Vishnugupta, who published the ancient Indian politics treatise, the Arthashastra. Since such, he is considered as the pioneer of the field of personal science and economics in India, wonderful work is thought of as an important precursor to time-honored economics. His works were lost nearby the end of the Gupta Empire and never rediscovered until the early on twentieth century.

Chanakya served the first Mauryan chief Chandragupta in his go up to power. He is widely credited for achieveing played an important role in the establishment of the Maurya Empire. Chanakya served as the primary advisor to both emperors Chandragupta

The ancient Arthashastra has been traditionally credited to Chanakya with a number of scholars. The Arthashastra identifies its creator by the name Kamu? ilya, except for one verse that refers to him by the name Vishnugupta. Kau? ilya is presumably the name of the author's gotra (clan).

One of the original Sanskrit literatures to identify Chanakya with Vishnugupta clearly was Vishnu Sharma's Panchatantra in the 3rd 100 years BCE.

K. C. Ojha puts forward the view that the traditional id of Vishnugupta with Kamu? ilya was caused by a confusion of the text's editor and it is originator. He shows that Vishnugupta was a reportero of the original work of Kau? ilya. Betty Burrow goes even further and suggests that Chanakya and Kau? ilya could have been two different people.
