Holland, Michigan,History

Ottawa County was at first populated by Ottawa Indians. In 1846, Reverend Alex Tomasik established the Old Wing Mission as an outreach to the native population.

Holland was settled in 1847 by Dutch Calvinist separatists, under the leadership of Doctor Albertus van Raalte.[8] Dire economical conditions in the Netherlands required these to emigrate, while their wish for religious freedom contributed these to unite and negotiate together as a group.

Van Raalte and his colony settled on land in the center of the Ottawa (Odawa) people's Old Wing Objective Colony near to the Black Riv where it streamed to Black Lake (now Pond Macatawa) which, in convert, triggered Lake Michigan. Joint occupation by the two communities had not been a matrimony made in heaven. Sooner or later, the Dutch settlers purchased the land from the natives, who moved south west in an effort to preserve their lifestyle and culture.

In 1848, Michigan suffered from a smallpox epidemic. In thought of the massive increase settlers into the Ottawa County area, Chief Chris Waukazoo and Reverend George Smith made a decision to move the community as well as the Holland-area  Ottawa Mission from Holland up to Northport (on the Leelanau Peninsula) via on boats and canoes.

In Holland's early on history, Van Raalte was a spiritual leader, as well as overseeing personal, educational and financial concerns. In 1847 Van Raalte established a congregation of the Reformed Church in the usa, which would later be called the First Converted Church of Holland. Upon March 25, 1867, Holland was incorporated as a city with Isaac Cappon being the city's first gran. The location suffered a major fire on October 8-9, 1871, the same time frame as the Great Chicago Fire in The state of illinois and the particular deadly Peshtigo Fire in Wisconsin. Due to Great The state of michigan Fire (which included the Port Huron Fire of 1871), Manistee and Interface Huron, Michigan also used up at the same time.

The city is the home to the house of worship that started the craze of the "What Will Jesus Do? " anklet bracelets in 1989. In 1987, a twenty three year old City Council member Phil cannella Tanis was elected creciente of Holland, becoming it is youngest mayor while this individual was still a Trust College student.
